The Venue – St George’s Hall
St George's Hall is widely regarded as a major work of European architecture and arguably, one of the finest neo-classical buildings in the world. It was designed by Harvey Lonsdale Elmes, a young architect who won two separate design competitions, one for a concert hall for the people of Liverpool, and one for the city's Law Courts. Both these designs were then incorporated into one building - St George's Hall which was opened in 1855.
The building is central to Liverpool's Cultural Quarter and was an important part of the successful bid to become the European Capital of Culture for 2008 and a key part of the area nominated for World Heritage Site status.
The Concert Hall, where A Christmas Carol will be staged, is thought to be the best example of interior design by Charles Robert Cockerell.
